For some reason I had always heard, “The French don’t like us. Don’t expect people to be friendly when you go to Paris.” I found just the opposite to be true. I was young and not as traveled as I am today. I wasn’t sure what to expect.
I found Paris mesmerizing… charming outdoor brasseries (cafes), fresh flower markets, bakeries filled with fresh-baked croissants and Danish – it was a romantic city steeped in history.
Small moments of interaction with Parisians added to its appeal. Although my conversations were brief, I sensed a welcoming attitude and was always greeted with a smile. I know people can have “one-off” encounters that leave a bad taste in their mouths, but you can’t stereotype an entire culture because of one incident. I’m not sure where that stereotype I heard had come from, but it was completely false.
I loved Paris, its people, and look forward to returning one day.
